Venetian Breeches

These simple, unconfined and tapered breeches were popular in the late Elizabethan period and early Stuart period (late 16th and early 17th century). They are very full and gathered at the top but angle steeply to an unconfined knee opening (no knee band) held closed with lacing holes and ribbon.

The waistband has lacing holes for pointing to the doublet or pourpoint. The front can have either a fly closure or a cod flap, although fly was more common in this period.

The fabric is usually wool and they are fully lined. I have several wool colours in stock, but any colour of fabric can be agreed, extra costs may apply for more expensive fabric.

You will need a pair of garters or another way to hold up your stockings as these breeches will not do it. You can make these easily yourself, or select garters on the order form as an option for simple cotton webbing garters.

Round Hose

These breeches or hose are very full and end above the knee with knee band. The leg fabric is pulled into the knee band using darts, not pleats, leading to a fuller shape at the knee.

They can be made with a codflap or codpiece (flap is shown). The waist band has lacing holes for supporting from a doublet or pourpoint - it is not recommended to belt these hose around the modern waist level instead of supporting with laces or large hooks and eyes.

The fabric is usually wool and they are fully lined. I have several wool colours in stock, but any colour of fabric can be agreed, extra costs may apply for more expensive fabric. It is best to use a fuller, thicker wool to get the rounder shape as thinner wool will sag too much.

Simple Doublet

This 16th Century doublet is ideal for lower class portrayal. Typified by a single skirt around the waist and either buttoned or hook and eye front closure, it is suited for the mid to late Elizabethan era. It can be made of wool or linen of almost any weight depending on the look required.

The doublet can have shoulder wings or not and comes with full tailoring of the shoulders and collar so that it retains its shape after wearing. These garments are very fitted and a fitting session is required at least once during the production.

With the degree of hand tailoring in the doublet and the work involved in the lacing strip (to hold up hose) and hand stitching the full lining, it is the single most expensive item of clothing for normal daily wear.

The sleeves can be full with a false frill, or slit with buttons or a turn back cuff.

The doublet shown was created as part of a suit for an apprentice. For more information, see the blog post on it.

CORONA VIRUS: Any doublet made until after the current lockdown is eased will be made to measurements, posted and then adjusted as much as possible if the fit is very poor.

Thank you so much for the amazing outfit. It is beautiful. I had so many compliments on the buttonholes. You will for sure be my first contact to commission new items and I will recommend you to anybody who may be even slightly interested.
